Also called Hokkien and Southern Min, Taiwanese is the dialect of Taiwan's original Chinese settlers, who came from Fujian (Hokkien), the province of Mainland China directly across the Taiwan Strait from Taiwan. It is spoken to some degree by most Taiwanese and is frequently alternated in daily speech with Mandarin, Taiwan's official language of government and education, brought to Taiwan by members of the Nationalist Party, who fled the Mainland on losing popular support to the Communist Party after World War II.
